The absolute majority of cheese in the world is imported by European countries which import nearly 70% of total imported cheese. Of non-European countries, the only United States and Japan are among the ten top major importers of cheese worldwide.
Top Cheese Exporting Countries
The 15 top countries shipped more than 84% of global cheese exported in 2020 and 80% of exporting countries were European countries. It means that the absolute majority of these are produced and shipped by European countries. Only three non-European countries-the United States, New Zealand, and Australia-are among the 15 top major cheese exporters in the world. with nearly 10% growth, Switzerland was the fastest-growing cheese exporter since 2019, followed by Austria, Belarus, and Poland with 6.2%, 4.1%, and 3.8% respectively. In 2020, the total value of exported cheese worldwide was 32.8 billion USD. 54% of which was shipped from five countries-Germany, Netherlands, Italy, France, United States- which are the major producers of cheese in the world. From the continental perspective, European countries gained $ 27.4 billion or 83.5% of all exported cheeses worldwide. Oceanian countries like New Zealand and Australia were in second place with h 6% share and North American countries were in the next place with 5.3% of cheese shipment in the world. Among countries, Germany was in the first place by exporting 14.6% of the world’s shipped cheese (4.8 billion USD). The Netherlands was the second place by exporting nearly 13% of exported cheese with a value of $ 4.2 billion. Italy by 10.9% ($ 3.6 billion), France by 10.7% ($ 3.5 billion), and the United ted States by 4.9% ($ 1.61 billiwaswere among the major exporters of cheese globally. To conclude, in 2020, four out of five top cheese exporters in the world, were European countries, and 54% of all exported cheese, is shipped from these countries. Nearly 84% of all exported cheese in the world originated from 15 top cheese producer countries, among which 12 major exporters were from Europe.
