The Price of New Zealand Kiwifruit From Production to Consumption

Kiwifruit is native to China but today New Zealand has a lot to share about kiwifruit in its season. It is considered a berry, as it grows on a vine. The most common species is fuzzy kiwi or Actinidia deliciosa.

The mature fruit is about the size of an egg and is 2 to 3 inches long. It looks brown and opaque from the outside, with light green flesh and rows of small black grains inside.

Kiwi flavor is sweet and slightly acidic. Kiwi is usually eaten raw, although some people prefer it as a juice. It is often used as a sweet spice due to its bright appearance.

One of the most common kiwi desserts is Pavlova, a meringue dish. This fruit is rich in dietary fiber and vitamins E ,C , and K. It is also believed that this fruit has medicinal properties.

Some studies have shown that it reduces the incidence of asthma, wheezing, and other respiratory problems. Kiwifruit has also been linked to improved digestion in people with irritable bowel syndrome.

Although native to China, the kiwi was not commercialized until it arrived in New Zealand in the early 20th century. These seeds were first planted in 1906 and bore fruit in 1910.

It was grown commercially in New Zealand in the 1940s. Kiwifruit became popular during World War II when US troops were stationed there.

It was first known as Kiwi in 1959 and became the official export name in 1974. In fact, the kiwi is also the national bird of New Zealand. In the 1980s, other countries of the world began to produce and export kiwi.

Today, kiwi is grown in many countries of the world, especially in temperate climates. It takes about seven years for the seedlings to bloom and bear fruit.

To save time, most plants are transplanted into the plant currently being produced. Cultivators plant 1 male plant for every 3 to 8 female vines for pollination.

After ripening, the fruit is harvested by hand with plants producing between 14,000 and 18,000 pounds per hectare, depending on the age of the plant.

Kiwifruit season NZ

The kiwifruit juice season in NZ runs from April to January. New Zealand's 2022 kiwi harvest season has kicked off, and there are more kiwis to be picked across New Zealand in the coming months.

2022 will likely be another record year, with more kiwifruit harvested than ever before.

At least 190 million pallets are expected to be harvested, surpassing last year's record of more than 177 million pallets. On average, there are about 30 kiwis in each tray.

The new RubyRed cultivars from Zespri are selected first, followed by the Gold and Green cultivars. The harvest usually peaks in mid-April and continues through June.

Sweet red kiwi with a raspberry flavor will also be picked from supermarket shelves in New Zealand and some overseas markets this year.

2022 marks the first year that RubyRed will be sold as a commercial variant. The Head of Farmers, Industry, and Sustainability at Zespri, said: “As this season's harvest is about to begin, farmers and the broader industry will once again comply with all government protocols and work to pick, package, and transport the expected product is another ample product to safely harvest at least About 190 million pallets, maybe more.

In addition to the continued increase in sales of our SunGold kiwifruit this season, we are excited about the first year of commercial sales of Zespri ruby kiwifruit, which we know consumers in New Zealand, Singapore, Japan, and China look forward to very much.

The success of the 2022 kiwi fruit harvest depends on the ability of the industrial supply chain to operate effectively in the rapidly changing COVID-19 environment.

The industry requires 24,000 people to pick and pack the crops. However, the increased incidence of COVID-19 is expected to limit its availability to New Zealand citizens.

In addition, the opening of New Zealand's borders is not expected to replace the 6,500 backpackers required for the harvest.

Kiwifruit harvest season NZ

Since we're in NZ, the terms "winter", "summer" and harvest season may be a little different than you're used to. By the way, summer in the northern hemisphere corresponds to winter in the southern. From June to August, New Zealand's growing season begins with the winter pruning of grapevines.

This is in contrast to the California season, which begins in late September and lasts until April. How can I tell if a particular fruit is in season? This is a very common issue.

Many people prefer to know when dried fruits and vegetables are in season. "If I don't know what fruit is in season, how can I choose the tastiest and healthiest fruit?" Only seasonal veggies are considered healthy in this case.

Isn't it true that "obsolete" fruit is still fresh and nutritious? Isn't it true that they're packed with chemicals? This isn't always the case! Our kiwis have a great flavour and are quite vibrant. So seek the signs no matter where the kiwis are grown or when you buy them.

Kiwifruit varieties NZ

Every fruit has different varieties, and kiwifruit is no exception. Kiwi species have evolved tolerance to bacteria and climate conditions over time.

There are three main varieties of kiwi in New Zealand today. New Zealanders didn't know what a Kiwi was until 1904. Isabel Fraser was the first to bring the seeds from China to New Zealand. It was planted in 1906 and began to bear fruit four years later.

Its fruit is known as the Chinese gooseberry or fruit star in Chinese. In 1950, New Zealand shipped its first fruit to the United States. Since 1980, kiwi output has expanded dramatically. After export controls were lifted in 1999, commercial production began.

After much disagreement among New Zealand's leading producers, it was originally dubbed Kiwi in 1959 by Jack Turner of Turners & Growers, one of the top kiwi exporters at the time. When they required a short word, they came up with the name Kiwi, which is somehow associated with the country.

New Zealand is now the world's largest kiwi grower. It is also the world's top exporter of kiwifruit (94 percent of its production is exported).

As New Zealand's kiwifruit production increased in the 1990s, the government collaborated with growers to determine how to handle fruit export processes and arrangements.

Zaspari Group was founded at this time, and Zaspari International was its subsidiary. Zaspari now has a monopoly on practically all New Zealand kiwi exports and is in charge of trading, licensing, advertising, and regulating the sector. Patents for Sungold Kiwifruit and Red Kiwifruit are also held by Zespri.

In New Zealand, this is the most common kiwi. As previously stated, New Zealand now produces three varieties of kiwifruit: Green kiwi, yellow kiwi/gold kiwi (Officially Sungold Kiwi), green kiwi, and red kiwifruit Their characteristics differ for a variety of reasons.

Freezing kiwifruit NZ

NZ freezing kiwifruit is so healthy than its fresh one. Fruit that has been frozen includes more vitamins and antioxidants, according to new research. Food scientists discovered that when the fruit was frozen, the body was able to absorb more antioxidants.

The human body can absorb more antioxidants than frozen fruit, according to studies. Antioxidants are present in fruits at room temperature, however, a study reveals that antioxidant levels are higher in frozen fruit.

Antioxidants, also known as carotenoids, aid in the prevention of cancer and heart disease while also improving the appearance of skin and hair.

When fresh, frozen juice is ingested at room temperature, its components break down into tiny particles, making nutrients easier to absorb in the gut.

Carotenoids contain anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and immune-boosting characteristics, and can be transformed into vitamin A.

The qualities of frozen natural fruits and fluids were investigated by scientists from the University of Seville. When frozen, vitamin C-rich fruits, such as citrus fruits, have a higher percentage of the nutrient. These foods are high in vitamin C, which helps to prevent diseases like mouth cancer, thyroid cancer, and stomach cancer.

Scientists from University College London and the University of Liverpool discovered that citrus fruits like oranges could reduce the risk of stroke by 60%, implying that citrus eating could heal anemia in humans.

In addition to citrus juice, freezing and drinking fresh tomato or watermelon juice can aid in the absorption of antioxidants from these fruits and vegetables.

Kiwifruit Australia

The kiwifruit is mostly found in the southern states of Australia. Furthermore, imports generate more volume than exports. The months of March through July are ideal for growing these fruits.

This fruit is available all year due to a significant amount of imports, primarily from New Zealand. Statistical information says, the per capita supply, according to the supplier, is 1.2 kg.

The kiwifruit was purchased by 35% of Australians on a shopping trip, with an average of 839 grams of kiwi purchased each trip.

The wholesale value of this fruit's fresh supply is $ 93 million. Retail accounted for $86.1 million, while food services accounted for $6.9 million.

New Zealand produced 7,134 tons of kiwi valued at $19 million this year. The primary region where kiwifruit is grown is in Australia's southern states. The Victoria Goulburn Valley is currently the key producing area. Kiwis are oval in shape and around the size of a large egg.

It has a light-colored covering on its skin that is camel-colored, fibrous, and coated in a light-colored coating. The kiwi skin is edible and completely sour, despite its fuzzy coating. Kiwi features a light green flesh with a distinct but pleasant texture, as well as prominent rows of edible black seeds.

Kiwis have a sweet, tangy, and strong flavor that makes them a favorite breakfast or lunch. Fresh Kiwi is traded internationally. Kiwifruit is mostly imported into Australia.

The country imports between 20,000 and 24,000 tons each year on average. Australia imported 23,262 tons of fruit in the fiscal year that ended in June 2019.  During the outbreak, trade was unaffected.

Italian kiwifruit

This cultivar is the father of the most well-known kiwi (zaspari), although it is also grown in many other nations. Not unexpectedly, Italy, the current European kiwi market leader, provides us with this high-quality type. This Italian kiwifruit is sweet and tasty, and it comes from the world's second-largest grower.

Italy is a world leader in the production of high-quality kiwifruit. Kiwi Hayward became a major player in the Italian fruit industry in the early 1980s, both quantitatively and qualitatively.

With over 40 years of experience in the production and improvement of this fruit, it is now grown in places where appropriate farming techniques are used to assure optimal fruit yield.

After China, Italy is the world's second-largest kiwi producer. Commercial production has been above 460,000 tons in recent years, with some years topping 550,000 tons, indicating the plant's vast production potential.

The majority of Italy's products are exported, particularly to EU countries, which still buy around 80% of Italy's Hayward kiwifruit.

Lazio, with around 8000 hectares 30 percent of the country, Piedmont, with more than 5000 hectares (20 percent of the country), Emilia Romagna, with 16 percent, and Venezia Trust, with 15 percent, are the primary production areas.
