The two stones were erected in the 1990s to honor the relationship between the city of Galway and Seattle, which later became the 'Twin Cities'.

The Galway stone was placed in 1993 while a corresponding stone in Seattle was installed in 1998.

At each stone, visitors can also measure the latitude and longitude of the other monument and the distance between the two.

Beside the stones are commemorative plaques with names of village relations and those involved in the project.

The plaques are in two languages: Irish and English.

Galway City Rock is at the intersection of Quay Street, opposite the Jury Inn, while you'll find Seattle's twin rock across the street from Pier 66 on the waterfront.

Old White Galway Limestone Random Rubble Building Stone is the beautiful stone you see driving down the N17 towards Galway "The walls are stone and the grass is green" to quote a famous Galwegian.

Concrete Wall Slab Features

What makes it so special?

No. 1 derives its name "White Limestone" from its rough appearance, its characteristic being remarkable.

It comes from boulders, so you have a natural cleft or stone out of the boulder, which makes the stone appear white.

Unlike Kilkenny Limestone, which is quarried from the cliff with a large saw, you get a smooth plain gray limestone finish with little character.

A blue Kilkenny can chisel limestone, but it's still blue!

No.2 We split the core from the stone to about 125mm+.

This allows our discerning customers to enjoy beautiful natural stone features without the inconvenience of trying to carve stone on site.

No.3 The stone is stacked in bulk bins for our customers with minimum waste and ease of use on site.

You can combine random remnants of old white Galway limestone with old white limestone cornerstones on architectural finds or entrance piers.

Almost all visitors to Ireland always say that the west coast is the best coast ever.

Even locals from eastern seaside cities like Dublin will admit they would much prefer to live and work in western counties like Galway and Kerry.

One thing these western regions have in common that you won't find in the east is a cluster of stone walls that snake across a gently undulating landscape.

As an Irish immigrant myself and a professional photographer, I find these animals to be one of the most beautiful parts of western Ireland.

Irish stone walls take on a whole new look in the sunlight under a bright blue sky.

You will notice that the stacked gems are not only precious and valuable, but they are covered with beautiful bags of white lichen that glisten in the sunlight.

Look closely and you'll also see dashes of orange and yellow lichen, sometimes creating an effect reminiscent of a military camouflage pattern on a rock face.

If that description of our beautiful stone walls in Ireland piqued your interest, read on for more facts about these incredible creatures that dot the Irish landscape.

How do they stand there?

Although I am not an expert wall-builder or mason myself, here I have built a small section of a stone wall in the traditional style.

Irish stone walls are made by carefully selecting the right stones as you go further and higher.

It is important to ensure that each stone fits properly into the wall, sits firmly and balances on the last layer.

Another thing I learned the hard way is that the standard approach is to place the smallest stones at the bottom and then finish or 'cover' them with your larger and heavier stones.

Although seemingly counterintuitive at first, the downward force of these boulders can help pack the underlying layers, compacting them as well as preventing them from shifting or leaking.

But yes, there is a lot of trial and error as you go, especially if you are learning how to build an Irish stone wall for the first time.
