Size is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing camping tents or campsites. You need an awning that is easily roomy, but you also want to strike a balance between weight, size, comfort, capacity, height of the tent, and finally, the cost. If you're looking for a new backpacking tent and wondering what size to buy, you've come to the right place. Here are some tips we draw from our years of experience in the outdoor industry to help you choose the best tent for your next adventure. Backpack Dimensions Tips: Backpacking tents and camping tents have similar features, but backpacking tents have one very important requirement: keeping the weight to an absolute minimum. 
For this reason, choosing the right size for a backpacking tent is a little more difficult, but very important. The goal is to find a shelter that is comfortably spacious while being as light and compact as possible. Bandwidth Rating Most backpacking tents come in different sizes. For example, Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL is offered in 1P, 2P, 3P, and 4P capacities. The capacity rating gives a good idea of the number of people in a particular tent, but most users feel that the tent's capacity rating exaggerates its actual size. In other words, backpacking tents often feel cramped due to their capabilities. In general, most tents and camping spots are: 1P Tent - Generally comfortable for one person with equipment in the vestibule 2P Tent - Deluxe one for one person with interior space for equipment storage. Suitable for two people with equipment stored in the vestibule. Suitable for standard width rugs (no wide rugs). 3P Tents - Deluxe for 2 persons with interior space for equipment storage. Suitable for two wide and comfortable saddlebags for two people as well as a small child or dog. Suitable for an average of 3 adults. 4P tents - luxury for 2-3 people with an interior cabin for equipment. Stylish and yet suitable for 3 people and a child or dog. Suitable for an average of 4 adults. 6P Tent - Comfortable for more than 4 garments. Tightened to 5 or 6. 8P Tent - Deluxe for 4+ outfits. It is comfortable for 6 people if there are some children or dogs 
10P Tents - Deluxe for more than 4 pieces of equipment. Handy for more than 6 gears. Narrow for more than 8 people Not all double backpacking tents are the same in terms of interior space and living conditions. Here are some tent tips and tricks that will help you guess exactly what a backpacking tent will look like just by looking at its design. Two normal (20") wide sleeping mats take up most of the space of a light 2-person tent. There is usually room for two small gear bags that can be worn on the head or legs. Most two-person tents can accommodate two people unless you are underage or don't mind intimate spaces. If you are going with a two-person tent, it is recommended to use normal-width mattresses. A wide (25") cushion and a regular (20") cushion fill the full width of the floor of most lightweight 2-person backpacking tents. A person with a wide pillow will dominate the room, but if the height of the pillow is exactly the same, you should be fine. It's not usually a great sleeping pad setup, but it's doable. If you want space for two (25-inch) berths, you usually end up with a lightweight three-person backpack tent. Usually, two pillows in a backpack do not fit two people. The advantage of a three-person tent is that you have the most comfortable interior space for two. 
That is why we prefer three-person tents. The downside to increasing your tent size is that it weighs more, so choose a lightweight tent model (more on that below). Recommendations for two-person tents We recommend double tents for one-way trips - some double tents like the NEMO Hornet 2, Big Agnes Fly Creek HV UL 2, and Hyperlight Mountain Gear Dirigo 2 are more compact than others. Slanted wall tents like this one only have a loft on the central facade, which makes them look very similar in two. In our opinion, these models are best for solo travelers who want more space to store and unfold their gear. Narrow but still workable two-person tents - Two-person tents such as Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL 2, MRS Hubba Hubba NX 2, NEMO Dagger 2 and Sling Fin Portal have more interior space thanks to the wide slate deck which makes the walls more vertical laterally. Tents designed in this way provide more space for two people to sit side by side. These tents are still quite narrow but are suitable for hiking partners who want to sacrifice elbow room in favor of a compact, lightweight tent. These tents are quite large for those who plan to combine single and double backpacks (with regular-width sleeping pads). PERSONAL TENT SIZES - The only two-person backpacking tent that we know of is really the right size is the REI Half Dome 2 Plus, which offers the generous width of two and wide sleeping platforms. However, Half Dome is one of the heaviest and heaviest tents on our list of the best backpacking tents, so this part isn't perfect. Hop into a 3-person tent – Most 2-person backpacking tents are too narrow for two average adults, so tourists often bump into a 3-person tent for some extra space inside. 
Remember that weight maintenance is very important when backpacking, so it is strongly recommended to go for a lightweight model if you are going to fall into the size of the tent. Some of the ultralight 3-person tents that we highly recommend are Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL 3 and Zpacks Triplex. While the premium Copper Spur and Triplex are expensive, we think they are worth the investment due to their surface area to weight ratio. If those prices are out of reach, there are a few cheap (but heftier) triple options: REI Half Dome 2 Plus or 3 Plus, REI Quarter Dome 3, and REI Passage 3. When camping, weight is not an issue because you don't carry the tent like a backpack. For this reason, it is usually worth buying a large and spacious tent for the number of people sleeping in it. Unfortunately, tent manufacturers also overestimate the number of people who can sleep comfortably in their tent, so here it is also useful to place it on a large scale. The general rule is to deduct two people from the capacity of each tent. For example, if you plan to sleep a family of four in your tent, a 6-person tent is likely to be your best bet. Choosing the size of the tent is very important as it may affect your outdoor experience.
