Natural Bitumen in Nigerian

A sizable deposit of natural bitumen may be found in Agbabu, which is located in Ondo State. This is one of Nigeria's many fortunate gifts. It was stated that the nation possessed a known deposit of approximately 42.47 billion tons of bitumen; this quantity is thought to be the second largest in the world; however, it has not yet been exploited for economic purposes. However, there is a dearth of study effort on its modification that has been published in the literature. As a result, this study is being carried out with the intention of determining whether or not polyphosphoric acid (PPA) is suitable for use as a modifier in Agbabu natural bitumen (ANB). In this comparative study of the performance of unmodified and PPA-modified ANB, a particular emphasis was placed on Fourier Transform Infrared investigation as well as essential physical tests such as penetration, softening point, fire and flash point, and specific gravity. An investigation was also conducted on the kinematic viscosity (flow) test. Penetration indices for ANB samples were derived using penetration values for softening points in order to make the calculation. The comparison of the FTIR spectra of base ANB samples and PPA-modified ANB samples revealed the emergence of a few additional peaks in the infrared spectra of PPA-modified ANB samples, which confirmed that the structure of the clean ANB had been altered. According to the findings of the experiments, incorporating PPA into the structure of ANB at a concentration of up to 6 percent resulted in a significant improvement of both the fundamental physical properties and the flow properties of ANB. This demonstrated that PPA has the ability to lengthen the amount of time that an ANB can remain in service. One of the most important uses of bitumen is in the building of asphalt roadways and pavement. However, previous research and practical application have demonstrated that the use of bitumen in its native form in pavement does not satisfy the required service life expectancy. The deterioration of the binder (bitumen) used for the pavement is believed to be the cause of the problem, which is caused by the growing volume of vehicles on the roadway. Alternative approaches to enhancing the quality of bitumen have been developed in order to fulfill the ever-increasing demands placed on the tensile strength of road surfaces. One of the methods is the incorporation of modifiers, which can include organic and inorganic materials like styrene-butadiene (SB), styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS), and ethylene terpolymer, ethylene-vinyl-acetate (EVA), polyethylene (PE), styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS), and polyphosphoric acid. Another method Prior to its application, the primary goal here is to enhance both the rheological qualities of the material, such as its elasticity and viscosity, and the basic properties of the material, such as its penetration value, its point of softening, and its flash and fire points. Research activities on the vast deposit of Agbabu natural bitumen in Nigeria have largely been concentrated on the physicochemical and engineering characterization of the material. Despite the fact that Nigeria is ranked as one of the first five countries in the world to be endowed with the largest deposit of natural bitumen, the country's research activities have largely been limited to this area. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the potential of PPA in extending the useful life of raw ANB. The sample of natural bitumen that was used in this investigation came from one of the observatory wells that had been dug by the Nigerian Bitumen Corporation (NBC-7), and it was situated directly across the street from Saint Stephen's Primary School in Agbabu, which is in the Nigerian state of Ondo. Southwest Nigeria is home to a region known as the bitumen belt, which is where Agbabu can be found. The belt may be found between the latitudes of 0060381N and 0060401N and between the longitudes of 0040341E and 0040371E. It is located in the eastern Dahomey Basin and spans the states of Edo, Ondo, and Ogun. Following the procedure outlined in our earlier research, the raw natural bitumen sample that was obtained from Agbabu was first dehydrated, and then it was purified. In order to produce the samples with the PPA modification, a high-shear mixer was used. In an iron container, 400 grams of ANB were brought to a liquid form by heating it to the appropriate temperature. After waiting for the temperature of the ANB to reach between 150 and 155 degrees Celsius, the PPA was progressively added. In order to obtain a uniform mixture, the temperature of the mixture was kept at 150–155 degrees Celsius, and the speed of the mixer was kept at 1200 revolutions per minute throughout the entire hour. The amount of PPA that was added to the ANB as a proportion of its weight ranged anywhere from 2% to 6%. The outcomes of the flow tests and the physical property measurements on the PPA-modified ANB samples are presented in Table 2. The penetration values of the PPA-modified samples range from 71 DMM in a sample with a 2 percent concentration of PPA modified to 55 DMM in a sample with a 6 percent concentration of PPA modified. As a result, the percentage of PPA utilized in the modification caused the penetration value of the modified samples to decrease as the percentage of PPA increased. Additionally, it was observed that all of the penetration values that were obtained for PPA-modified samples were lower than the 82 DMM that was obtained for the base ANB. PPA-modified samples were found to have a higher softening point than base ANB, which is 49 degrees Celsius. The softening point of PPA-modified samples increased from 50 degrees Celsius for 2 percent PPA modified ANB to 60 degrees Celsius for 6 percent PPA modified ANB. This is an indicator that the PPA alteration resulted in increased resistance of the samples to the temperature susceptibility following the modification. It was discovered that the kinematic viscosities of PPA-modified samples, which varied from 540 cSt for 2 percent PPA-modified sample to 1005 cSt for 6 percent PPA-modified sample, were relatively greater than that of base ANB. This was the case for all of the PPA-modified samples (350 cSt). A prior study by Shulga and colleagues came to a conclusion that is comparable to this one. They reported that the addition of PPA to a different grade of bitumen obtained from China, Venezuela, Canada, and Russia resulted in reduced values of penetration, increased values of softening point with the exception of Canadian bitumen, whose softening point remained essentially unchanged, and increased values of dynamic viscosity measured at 60 °C for all tested bitumen samples. These findings were based on measurements taken at a temperature of sixty degrees Celsius. In a study that was very similar, Huang et al. looked into the effect that adding 1.5 weight percent of PPA had on the aging properties of asphalt binders. According to the results of their research, PPA-modified asphalts increase the initial stiffness and improve the low-temperature flow characteristics. This was shown to be the case. D'Angelo conducted research to determine how 0.5 percent wt. PPA would affect high-temperature binder grade, as well as Venezuelan and Saudi Light. PPA was shown to increase the stiffness of asphalt binders and improve cross-linking, whereas styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) was found to boost the elastic responsiveness of asphalt binders. These findings were presented by the author of the study. As the amount of PPA that was included as a percentage grew in the samples of ANB that were modified with PPA, the penetration indices also increased. When the penetration index goes up, it means that the level of hardness of the modified bitumen goes up as well.
