After about 24 months of age, cattle are slaughtered for the purpose of producing meat. Although dairy cows and bulls live longer than other cattle, their skin suffers greater damage as a result of parasites, injuries, and the natural aging process because of this. Because it is stable and solid, bovine leather can be used for a variety of purposes. The hides are of a size that allows them to be utilized in expansive locations. About five square meters of surface area is covered by a single piece of cattle leather. Leather covering an area of around 25 square meters is required for a large sofa. The amount of waste ranges from 30–45 percent, depending on the size of the individual surfaces, and can even be greater for exceptionally big individual surfaces. Nevertheless, there are distinctions between the many breeds of cattle. In general, the skin area that may be harvested from a Bavarian cow is roughly equivalent to that of two zebu cows. However, a Brazilian company called Mastrotto sells zebu skins that are 5.5 square meters in size. These skins come from the animal. 
Leather that originates from cattle, such as bull hide or cow skin, is referred to collectively as "cow leather." Grain pattern and haptics are the primary factors that contribute to the minor variances between species. Between 0.4 and 0.9 grams per cubic centimeter is the normal density of a bovine leather skin. Cow leather has a tensile strength that ranges from 8 to 25 N/mm2 on average. In most cases, only the outermost layer of a cow's skin is used in the tanning process. There are a few notable exceptions to this rule, such as the rumen leather or bull testicles. Rawhide dealers take the skins from the butcher and store them before selling them to tanneries. The type of skin that is sold depends on the animal's age (calfskin), sex (the automotive sector uses bull leather the most), and weight (which influences the size of the skin).
