Figs are a southern plant with limited winter hardiness.
But the difficulty is much more than a few degrees below zero.
It is a combination of the variety chosen, location, type of soil, fertilizer, and how the cold occurs.
So forget the myth that a particular variety is guaranteed to be hardy.
Choose a location that is sheltered from the cold northern winter winds.
A south-facing wall is ideal, but southeast or southwest is also useful.
Provide dry, well-drained soil and add additional stones as needed.
Crushed stone and a little extra lime are fine.
Heavy clay, wet ground or high water level cannot be used in winter.
