The first glass mosaic factory in the Americas was established in 1949 by Elpidio Perdomo under MOSAICOS VENECIANOS DE MÉXICO. The creation of what is now referred to as "Mexican Smalti" was made possible with the assistance of Italian glass artists who were still employed there, the fusing of the centuries-old recipes of the Murano Masters, and the substitution of local raw materials and techniques for sale.

And you will, I'm sure! The cut is the first and most obvious difference. Both manufacturing processes produce a pool of liquid glass. It is known as a pizza in Italy and a tortilla in Mexico. The thickness of the Italian pizza is about 3/8." "1/4 of the tortilla. To reveal the pizza's interior, the Italian smalti was poured thicker and divided into thinner pieces (resembling a little brick). When the inside of the glass is exposed, the color is more vivid, uniform, and reflective. This inside (riven side) becomes the material's working surface. On the exposed working side, the pieces are more uniform in size (3/8" x 5/8") but less so in thickness. Italian smalti comes in a variety of thicknesses. Thus, it must be set backward to produce a finished piece with a flat surface. (The reverse approach is only necessary if you want a job that is accomplished smoothly.) 
The visible working side of Mexican smalti is cut into larger, irregular squares (about 5/8") using a consistent 3/16" thickness "thickness. It resembles a tile more closely. The top or bottom of the tortilla serves as the working area for Mexican smalti and has a smooth, bubble-free surface. Because of its flat surface, constant thickness, and absence of bubbles can be directly set with or without grout. If they want to add texture to their creation, many artists may agitate the Mexican smalti. The color variations. Smalti has been produced for generations in Italy. They pay close attention to the colors' consistency, quality, and brilliance. The smalti pots are changed frequently to maintain these properties, and considerable care is taken to prevent color contamination. Making smalti is as much an art as using it, and the recipes are passed down from generation to generation. Smalti from Mexico is newer in contrast. It only started to exist in the 1950s. Mexican smalti were created as a result of a partnership between a Mexican businessman and an Italian glass artist. In Mexico during this time, there was a great demand for the creation of murals and other mosaic decorations. Mexican smalti was created by fusing fresh cutting methods with Italian recipes. To build murals and other public projects with a smooth surface, the "new" smalti material was designed to have a smooth surface with a hand-cut feel. 
Because they were only using the surface and not the riven side, they combined the Italian recipes but poured them more thinly. As a result, they recognized they had come across the rich beauty of the glass's uneven surfaces. The recipes and clean hue received less attention than the tortilla's speckled, impressionistic appearance. Either piece frequently has a distinct color on each side, and each batch contains a variety of hues of the same color. Smalti "pots" are not frequently changed since they are searching for the mottled color; instead, when one color is done, a new color is mixed in, and the two start to merge, producing the mottled hue. This is both a blessing and a curse for me as an artist and a seller of Mexican smalti. Although it creates such lovely color variations within a single batch, replicating colors between batches makes it more challenging. The best approach when ordering smalti is always to order more than you need to complete your job. Particularly in the case of the Mexican smalti, colors differ from batch to batch. It might be as easy as choosing which to employ for your project. Mexican smalti makes it simpler to install things or create smooth surfaces. Italian smalti is the best option if you want texture and reflection. Alternately, you might utilize both as I do! Amounts of smalti glass tiles are approximations because no two parts are precisely comparable. It is imperative to order what you need in advance to finish your project because fluctuations in color and availability between orders are common. If you overestimate, you can exchange whole, unused bags.

WeldBond - Clings to nearly any surface. It isn't waterproof; it's just water-resistant. This glue doesn't accept colorants and is thin (imagine school glue). Try out different adhesives; there are so many available. Test everything before making a decision! I always suggest reading the label with adhesives. A ton of information is provided, along with different items and usage directions. Many artists use smalti without grout and arrange the pieces in close proximity. Using unsanded grout requires that the gaps be no greater than 1/8 ". Use sanded grout for larger joints. Then, only any gaps are filled with an un-sanded grout, which frequently matches the tile's color. Sanded grout is my preferred option and may be utilized in all applications. Due to the uneven surface, grout is typically not used in traditional smalti work. Mexican smalti, on the other hand, has a more constant thickness, which makes grouting much simpler. However, it is advisable to test the smalti before grouting because you may prefer the way it looks without grout. I prefer to position the pieces as closely as possible and fill the spaces with grout that has been colored to blend in with the smalti in that location. This keeps the appearance of a smalti "painting." Use a contrasting hue to draw attention to the grout lines as part of your design.
