The bike is commemorating its 200th anniversary, and we'll be there to help you celebrate with us.

The invention that Drais made in Mannheim in 1817 had a significant impact.

The development of the bicycle is detailed in this article.

Were those in the Victorian era who rode bicycles the first true hipsters? Long before there were men riding fixies with elaborate beards and vintage attire, there were men riding velocipedes and penny-farthings with sculpted mustaches and elegant attire.

The bicycle, just like fashion, has evolved over the course of time.

Once upon a time, the automobile was considered to be the means of transportation of the future.

However, now, cyclists and a network of bike lanes are progressively coming to define the cityscape in the majority of the world's largest cities.

The significance of the bicycle cannot be overstated; its invention led to the creation of the first human-powered, two-wheeled transportation system; it paved the way for the emancipation of women; and it is a symbol of development, pleasure, and amusement, as well as liberty and happiness.

However, it also expresses hope and is perfectly adapted to a future that will be confronted with huge challenges such as a changing climate, an obesity epidemic, and an ever-increasing population, particularly in the larger cities.

In any event, it has come a long way from its beginnings as a hobbyhorse, which was rather insignificant.

Even though there is some circumstantial evidence that bicycles existed prior to the year 1800, it is a well-established historical fact that the first bicycle was invented in Germany in the year 1817 by a gentleman named Baron Karl von Drais.

It was the first successful, human-powered, two-wheeled, steerable mode of transportation and was given the name "Laufmaschine" or "Draisine" when it was patented in the year 1818.

Denis Johnson, an inventor based in London, is credited with developing a more recent and advanced version of Drais' initial walking machine.

Other inventors also became interested in the concept.

It was nearly entirely constructed out of wood and had a front wheel that could be turned, and it was able to decrease travel time in half.

This two-wheeled creation did not have pedals, so riders had to use their feet to move the hobbyhorses and roll them down hills while simultaneously attempting to maintain their balance.

Affectionately known as "hobby horse" or "dandy horse" ("horse for the folks") after the children's toy in England, it was formally known as a "velocipede," and it already more or less resembled the two-wheeled type that is known as Cycles today.

Between the years 1818 and 1820, the ownership of a velocipede became a cult that engulfed western Europe and North America.

Having just been conquered by the West, China was originally displeased to learn of yet another foreign innovation and mostly disregarded the concept.

At the tail end of the 19th century, most people who rode bicycles in Shanghai were foreigners, while Shanghainese people of status continued to ride in sedan chairs or the most recent form of transportation, the rickshaw (invented in 1870).

It was considered quite impolite for a decent Chinese man to walk around independently or, even worse, to be seen to be perspiring in public.

As a result of the ability to travel at greater speeds while using larger front wheels, the size of those wheels gradually increased through time, whilst the function of the rear wheel gradually shifted toward that of a support wheel.

By the year 1880, producers had already bloated the dimensions of the front wheel to ridiculous proportions, which led to the birth of the penny farthing.

The new bicycle that featured an enlarged front wheel came to be known as the "penny farthing" in Britain.
