Peanut Island
Peanut Island is a small island in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States, measuring 79 acres (0.32 km2), and it is located near the mouth of the Lake Worth Inlet. Dredging work in 1918 led to the creation of the inlet as well as the Port of Palm Beach. These initiatives were also responsible for the formation of the island. The island, which was formerly known as Inlet Island, was renamed Peanut Island in preparation for a proposed peanut oil-shipping enterprise that did not materialize in 1946. The island underwent a restoration in 2005 that cost around $13 million USD, resulting in the creation of Peanut Island Park, which features camping areas, a pier, and an artificial reef. It features beautifully landscaped gardens and picnic areas, as well as well-maintained pathways that are completely around the island. The island was also the site of a bomb bunker that had been constructed covertly for President John F. Kennedy shortly after he was elected in the year 1960. Kennedy would frequently spend the winters in Palm Beach, which is located in adjacent Florida. The Detachment Hotel, which served as the shelter, was closed to the public in October 2017, after having been open for tours for a number of years.
