Differences in granite, quartz and marble
While granite, quartz and marble are forged deep in the earth's crust, onyx is born on the surface. Onyx is formed from spring water or groundwater in which calcite is abundantly dissolved. When this water reaches the mouth of the spring, the minerals leach out and form a crust of calcite crystals.
Over time, more water flows and more minerals settle. The differences between the layers are caused by differences in water flow rates and small amounts of impurities. In its purest state, calcite is white or clear, but is easily colored by small amounts of other minerals.
In the commercial stone industry, onyx refers to a range of stones that are composed of layered bands of light or translucent minerals.
Most slabs of onyx are what geologists call banded calcite. The same material is also known as onyx marble, Mexican onyx or Egyptian alabaster.

This expensive but rare stone requires proper installation and care when used at home. Here are some ways to handle them with care!
Cutting tilesThe fragile nature of onyx stone requires it to be backed with mesh, resin or fiberglass as reinforcement. Cutting tile requires a diamond blade on a wet saw, as anything smaller will cause the onyx to crack or create an uneven substrate.
Additionally, onyx stone tiles require a 5/8” cement backer board for floor installation and a ¼” cement backer board for onyx tiles.
Retaining its translucencyDue to its translucency, the onyx stone easily reflects the embedded material underneath, thereby influencing the color of the stone.
As a result, onyx stone tiles should be laid on white mortar to preserve its translucency. Make sure the mortar grooves are smoothed to prevent shadows from reflecting off the onyx stone.
laid the pavementThe unique nature of onyx tiles can result in many tiles with mismatched colors or patterns. To help lay the onyx tiles, create a dry layout of the tiles to make sure the tiles are well mixed and the colors are well varied. Once you are satisfied with it, proceed to install your stunning onyx stone wall tiles.
Protection of onyx tilesDue to the highly porous nature of the onyx stone, it is very susceptible to moisture, etching and staining. As such, onyx tiles should be sealed with a sealant designed for porous stones.
After sealing, the tiles can be grouted. Just like a waxed car, a good sealer will keep stains at bay due to water beading on the surface of onyx tiles.
Cleaning of Onyx tilesAlthough most people consider onyx stone to be hard and put it in the same categories as marble or granite, onyx stone is incredibly soft. The fastest way to exfoliate an onyx stone is to expose it to an acidic liquid such as vinegar, lemon or red wine.
When cleaning onyx tiles, be sure to use mild soap and warm water. Scrub the tiles in a circular motion to remove soap residue, then rinse with clean water. Avoid bleach or other harsh chemicals and floor cleaners when maintaining onyx tiles.
