This is our past. 1920s – Take the First Baby Step When Charles and Eveline Clinkard, a husband-and-wife pair, launched their first shoe store in Middlesbrough in 1924, that was the year that we took our initial steps as a business. The business model was straightforward: produce shoes of exceptional quality and deliver an exceptional buying experience to customers. These core values continue to have a significant impact on the day-to-day operations of the company, from the selection of products to the level of service provided to clients. The 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s: The Pitter-Patter of Little Feet After the end of the Second World War, Eveline Clinkard expanded the store's inventory to include children's footwear, which was an immediate hit with customers. Because Charles and Eveline had four children of their own, Eveline developed a passion for ensuring that children's shoes were properly fitted, and she would personally measure and fit children who came into the business. Charles and Eveline had four children of their own. The company has always placed a strong emphasis on the need of ensuring that children's shoes are properly fitted. 1950's – Expansion Finkle Street in Stockton, California, became home to the second Charles Clinkard shop when it opened in the year 1950. In the same year, firm founder Charles Clinkard made the decision to retire, handing over a successful business to his wife Eveline and their three sons, Colin, John, and Roger to further develop. The three young men were resolved to take the firm to new heights, and three years later, when we built our third shop in Redcar, the company once again extended its operations and reached new heights. The 1960s: The Beginning of Our Adventures in Wholesale The decade of the 1960s saw the establishment of a fourth location for the corporation, which was located in Northallerton. Roger Clinkard also came to the conclusion that he wanted to try his hand at something new in the business world, so he established the wholesale company Intershoe and began the novel practice of importing winter boots from Scandinavia. Intershoe is still an integral element of the Clinkard brand and acts as the exclusive representative for Gabor in the United Kingdom. Decade of the 1970s: Passing the Torch The 1970s saw the establishment of both our flagship store in Newcastle's brand-new Eldon Square shopping center and our Leeds location, which was our first store located outside of the North East region. Both of these stores are still in operation today. 1974 was the year that the company celebrated its 50th birthday, and in the same year, Colin Clinkard joined the business full time after selling his accounting practice. In 1974, the company also celebrated its golden anniversary. In 1976, after Eveline had been employed by the company for a total of 52 years, she made the decision to retire and turn over the management of the company to her sons. The 1980s: The Dawn of a New Era The decade of the 1980s saw the firm expand from strength to strength, as seen by the establishment of additional shops and Roger Clinkard's election to the presidency of the Independent Footwear Retailers Association (IFRA). He added to that triumph the following year when, at the Independent Footwear Retail Dinner, he was awarded the title of Footwear Personality of the Year. He was the very first individual to be given this honour. Charles, Roger's son, joined the family firm in 1989 after gaining experience in retail management at the Bally Shoe Company. Decade of the 1990s: "Keeping It in the Family" Eveline House, the company's new offices and storage space, was officially opened for business at Preston Farm Business Park in the year 1991. After another four years, Charles Clinkard, the grandson of the company's founder, was appointed to the Board of Directors. After a year, his cousin Rachel Clinkard became a member of the team and contributed to the expansion of the merchandise division. At the close of the decade, Charles was given the role of Managing Director; this is the accomplishment of which he is most proud during his whole life. The 2000s: The Era of Digital Technology As the new millennium began, the corporation underwent significant changes as well. In 2004, the firm opened its first online shop, and in 2008, it grew even further when it took over 12 outlets that had previously been owned by Stead and Simpson. The internet quickly became a significant element of the company and made it possible for us to communicate with clients who were unable to visit our retail outlets. This included people from other countries! 2010s: A Decade Spent Considering the Future At the Footwear Today Awards in 2012, the firm was honored with the title of Best Footwear Multiple Retailer, thus celebrations broke out all over the place. After another year had passed, Managing Director Charles was honored with the title of Footwear Personality of the Year and received a Special Recognition Award at the North East Business Awards. The firm was given another award in 2014 for being the Best Footwear Multiple Retailer at the Footwear Today Awards. This is the second time the company has won this title. Istore, a service that allows consumers to examine and buy from the whole selection of shoes, was also made available to customers in 2014. This development took place in 2014. In 2016, it became abundantly evident that we had outgrown our head offices, and as a result, we relocated to brand-new buildings that had been custom-built for us back in Middlesbrough, the place where it all started.
