10. First Call and the Vague and Clear Technique

The hardest part of a business negotiation is the first call.

You don’t know them, and they don’t know you.

Trust is at zero, and perhaps even less than zero.

A frozen space with no previous background.

Worries about being rejected.

Worries about being treated poorly.

Worries about not getting the cooperation you need.

And a world of other worries that make you want to give up on trade altogether.

Are these difficulties physical?

No.

Are these difficulties inherent in business, or is it that you are still a shy and introverted person?

You can see that it’s not inherent in business; all you need is a short time to overcome this mental difficulty and your shy nature.

Later, you’ll see that if a day passes and you don’t meet a new person, you’ll become deeply depressed.

Look at your life before Arad.

Perhaps in a year, you had a connection with 10 or 12 new people, but those were in defined environments like university, gym, or other places, and it was just limited to greetings or maybe a bit deeper. But here, in Arad and in business, you’re going to start 10 new leads and signals every day.

And these aren’t just connections like greetings; they are relationships where the person wants to give you their money, and you know that for many people, money is even more precious than life.

And for the remaining group, money and life are on the same level. 🤣

How can we initiate this relationship so that we can both attract the person and make them understand they have come to the right place?

There are various techniques, and one of these techniques is an art called vague and clear.

What does vague and clear mean?

It means you say things that the person does not understand the meaning of at all.

Then you divide the same things you said, which they did not understand, into two parts.

One part you explain to make them understand what it means.
The other part you do not explain at all, leaving it vague for them.

Alongside these vague statements, you also say other things that they completely understand.

All these vague and clear statements must be aligned with your business and work.

Do not tell yourself the author said to speak vaguely and then go and say vague things that have nothing to do with your business.

For example, in Arad, we have some terminologies.

Business School, which is completely clear because “school” is obvious, and “business” is also clear.

Business Podcast, where “podcast” might be a bit vague if the person has not heard it before, but its meaning becomes clear very quickly, and “business” is transparent.

Lead and Signal, which are completely vague. Even though Arad tries to clarify them and has explained them many times, as seen in yesterday’s question on the channel, many people still do not know what they mean. This shows they have been vague, are vague, and will remain vague, except for those who read the site’s content carefully and think about it.

Promotion, which is a completely vague word. I am certain even those who are entirely familiar with the site do not precisely know how Arad’s promotion services work for different numbers, except for a very limited number of people, fewer than the fingers on both hands.

Some might ask, why does Arad use these terms?

Because our human minds, if they understand all the words, will conclude that there is nothing here for me to gain.

But as soon as there are terms they do not understand and later learn, they feel happy and think this site offers valuable insights for me.

Do you know who was the first person in the world to use the vague and clear technique in negotiations?

Take a moment to think and see if anyone comes to mind.

You guessed completely wrong.

The first one to use this technique was God.

Take a look at His book, where right after the opening chapter (Al-Fatiha), in Surah Al-Baqarah, He says:

"A. L. M.

This is the Book; in it is guidance sure, without doubt, to those who fear Allah."

We understand the part, "This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of God."

But what does "A. L. M" mean?

Commentators have given various interpretations, but if you ask them, "Would you risk being punished in Hell if your interpretation is wrong?" they will say no because they are not certain about their view.

Only God, His Messenger, and the Imams know the meaning of A. L. M, even though 1,400 years have passed. And if 14,000 years pass, its meaning will still remain vague.

This style of vague and incomprehensible speech is frequent in God’s Book.

For instance: "Woe to the makers of the pit [of fire]."

No commentator has yet been able to definitively say who the "makers of the pit [of fire]" were.

Some people have interpreted it humorously as referring to chain-smokers who constantly blow smoke behind them! 😂

Or the words of God, where He said:

Al-Haaqqah means: The inevitable.

Ma al-Haaqqah means: What is the inevitable?

And what do you understand about what the inevitable is?

In the next verse, the discussion completely changes, leaving both you and me in confusion about what the inevitable is. 😂

However, it's not always the case that vague speech is used without providing an answer.

For example, He says:

But he has made no haste to traverse the steep path.

Here, Al-‘Aqabah (the steep path) is a vague term.

Then He says:

"And what can make you know what the steep path is?"

At this point, we are left wondering about the meaning of Al-‘Aqabah.

And then He moves us from vagueness to clarity and explains:

"Freeing a slave in the way of Allah,"

"Or feeding a hungry person on a day of famine,"

"Caring for an orphan of near kinship,"

"Or a needy person in misery."

"Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, [constancy, and self-restraint], and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion."

"Those are the companions of the right."

Surah Al-Balad (90:11-18)

So we saw that there are vague and ambiguous words that are explained and unfolded in some places, while in others, they leave you in a haze and do not provide answers.

And of course, there are many verses that are completely clear.

Why do we use this technique?

Just the fact that you speak ambiguously engages the listener's mind, making them wonder what the new word you just said means.

If you remember in the "Barareh" (Iranian satire television series), Shir Farhad would always say:

"What do you mean by this?"

At times, you give an answer to calm their mind, to make them believe in your expertise, and to make them happy that they are talking to someone who can add to their knowledge.

And in some cases, you leave things ambiguous so that after interacting with you, they don't think, "I understood everything," and their mind stays active, trying to figure out the real meaning of what you said.

Right now, I am sure that you are at ease regarding the "Al-‘Aqabah," but you are thinking about "Al-Haaqqah" and wondering what "Al-Haaqqah" means?

Some of you might even go and search for it.

But regarding "Al-‘Aqabah," the case is already closed, and you don’t think about it anymore.

If you answer all the mental questions of the customer, once the conversation is over, they won't think about your words, and they will set you aside.

However, if you leave some things vague, it will be better for both of you.

Some things you will explain so that they think, "How great that I found someone who can add to my knowledge, so I will continue this conversation."

Another question that arises is: where should we use the vague and ambiguous technique?

You can use this technique anywhere during the first contact, but if you look closely at the Quran, you will see that God uses this method more in the early verses.

That is, vague verses and disjointed letters appear at the beginning of the chapters, and although we see similar negotiation artistry from God in the middle and later verses, the density of this technique is much higher at the beginning of the chapters.

And the next question is: what percentage of our speech should be dedicated to this technique?

Ultimately, one or two percent.

If you read the Quran, you will see that less than 2% of the verses in God's book speak ambiguously.

How many of the ambiguous points should we explain, and how many should we leave ambiguous?

Explain more than 80% of the ambiguous points to make them enjoy it, and leave less than 20% ambiguous.

What’s important is that in the very first contact, we let the customer understand that we are special, different from everyone they have seen in business so far, and if they join us, things will be very different.

I hope you read this text several times because if you don't act correctly, you will get confused, and the situation will be like the crow who came to learn how the partridge walks and ended up forgetting how to walk itself.

If you don’t want to carefully and thoughtfully work with this technique, please disregard today’s text and pretend you have never heard such words.

The first call and reach out is extremely important because the other side is struggling to just find the simplest and the most basic point in order to stop the communication. So it is up to a good negotiator to not give them such excuses.
