Sometimes green tomatoes are picked before they have fully matured on purpose, but more often than not, they are simply tomatoes that were not given enough time to mature before the end of the growing season. Because of this, the end of summer and the beginning of fall are the most common times to spot them. The Proper Way to Prepare Unripe Tomatoes To begin, although it is possible to ripen green tomatoes, this process is not guaranteed to be successful.
