9. What is the job of the righteous? Are they rich or poor?
Once I finished reciting Surah Al-Fatiha, I moved on to Surah Al-Baqarah.
Maybe I didn't pay attention to why we start with Surah Al-Baqarah after Al-Fatiha.
And what exactly is the story behind Surah Al-Baqarah, which is the longest surah in the Quran?
I did a little research.
I found that the story originates from the time of the Israelites, where someone had died and the people wanted him to be resurrected.
They turned to Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) and asked for his help in solving the issue.
He responded by saying:
“And then recall when Moses said to his people: Behold, Allah commands you to slaughter a cow.” Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 67
The Israelites, like all the people before them who were sent prophets and messengers, mocked and rejected him.
But I had my answer.
I realized that if I want to save myself from being spiritually dead and revive myself, at least I need to pay the cost equivalent to that of a cow.
If the Prophet of Allah wants to save me from this state of poverty, which, according to Imam Ali, is worse than death, he will tell me to invest the cost of sacrificing a cow.
I searched the price of a cow on an online marketplace and found that even a lean cow costs about 80 million Toman, with some reaching over 120 million Toman.
That’s when I had a profound realization.
The longest surah of the Quran is teaching me this: O human, if you want to live as the living do, not like the dead, you must be willing to sacrifice at least a cow.
I thought, "O God, people spend on everything, but when it comes to trade, they all become poor."
One person says, “I don’t have money because I lost it in the stock market.”
Another says, “I don’t have money because I lost it in pyramid schemes.”
Everyone has lost their money elsewhere and then reaches business.
Trade is the oppressed field, where all the losers have turned.
There is no one who hasn't lost somewhere and still wants to invest in their own business.
It was in these thoughts that an idea sparked in my mind.
I remembered the first verses of Surah Al-Baqarah, where Allah, after the disconnected letters Alif-Lãm-Mĩm, says:
“This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those mindful of Allah.” Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 2
"Those mindful of Allah"—what a strange term for me. Everyone interprets it according to their own understanding.
Who exactly are these people?
What is their job?
Are they poor or rich?
I was lost in these thoughts and said, "O God, people have different opinions about the righteous.
You tell me, who are these people?"
It was then that I realized, surely Allah would not mention this word without defining it.
I asked my team to search and find more details about the characteristics of the righteous (those mindful of Allah).
A few hours later, the answer came, bringing peace to every reader’s heart.
There, Allah says:
“Indeed, the righteous will be in a secure place.” Surah Ad-Dukhan, verse 51
Fî maqâmin amîn. (A secure place)
O God, how familiar this word is.
Ah, I remembered.
Muhammad Al-Amin.
The title of the beloved Prophet of Islam.
The love of all of us Muslims.
What was his occupation?
Why was he given the title "Al-Amin"?
Why should the righteous have this characteristic of your Prophet?
What does (maqām) mean?
It means a place to stand.
A place to stand firmly.
The righteous stand in a place where they embody the characteristic of being trustworthy.
In what occupation?
In what path?
In the same occupation, path, and tradition of your Prophet Muhammad Al-Amin.
In trade.
I thought, "Maybe I am imagining things."
But when I read the next verse, I saw that it wasn’t imagination—it was the truth.
“Amid gardens and watersprings.” Surah Ad-Dukhan, verse 52
So, surely, they are wealthy, for gardens with flowing water are very expensive.
And what a deep connection there is between being trustworthy (Al-Amin) and owning gardens, rivers, and springs.
Then I read the next verse, and it was clearly about wealth and prosperity.
“Attired in silk and brocade, they shall be arrayed face to face.” Surah Ad-Dukhan, verse 53
O God, you first mention their place of sitting, then the clothes they wear.
Do you know what (sundus) is?
A fine silk garment, which happens to be very expensive.
It is a very delicate and precious silk fabric that the aristocrats and elites wear.
And what is (istabraq)?
Expensive garments made of thick silk, worn as outer clothing
The wealth of these pious people seems endless.
“So it will be. And We will pair them to maidens with gorgeous eyes.” Surah Ad-Dukhan, verse 54
I thought, "O God, here too, we are discussing wealth."
A few days ago, I saw someone who said, "Why are most of the girls sitting in high-end cars so beautiful?"
I said, "Because the wealthy who own these cars don’t marry unattractive girls or get involved with unattractive women."
In short, most of these cars belong to their husbands or boyfriends, and they are wealthy, so they spend time with the beautiful ones.
He agreed, and I added, "Also, if you have money, you can make anyone beautiful."
There are surgeries and beauty treatments that can make anyone appear beautiful.
These "before and after" pictures show you how powerful money can be in transforming someone’s appearance.
I realized, "O God, the verses about the wealth of the pious seem never-ending."
“There they will call for every fruit in serenity.” Surah Ad-Dukhan, verse 55
"Yad'ûn" comes from the same root as "dua" (to pray).
"Aminîn" is also from the same root, the word we say after praying.
This means that these people, whatever fruit, pleasure, or request they desire, it will be granted to them.
Now, do these blessings require money?
So, they have so much wealth that whatever they wish for, they see it ready and in front of them.
Continue it yourself.
With the characteristics of the righteous described here,
What is their occupation?
Are they rich or poor?
In short, whatever they are, they are the ones who have been guided by the teachings of the Quran.
