This includes the plates, spoons, and forks made of plastic that are provided with our evening meal. It is estimated that India generates 5,600 metric tons worth of waste made of plastic every single day. Most vendors prefer to use silverware that is disposable since it enables them to serve more customers, which is especially beneficial during peak hours, and it saves them a large amount of time that they would otherwise have to spend washing plates. The fast-food industry adds further gasoline to the fire since it uses a range of packaging tactics to make its products appear more delicious to consumers who may be interested in purchasing them. Plastics play an important part in the development of modern "tamper-proof" packing techniques. These techniques are intended to prevent items from being opened before they are delivered to their intended destination. Even if a considerable deal of work is expended to ensure that the number of materials used in the packaging is kept to a minimum, it is still the case that a sizeable amount of it is not capable of biodegrading. It is not unusual to find, not too far away from these vendors, little piles of waste, the majority of which consists of discarded plates and utensils left by customers. These piles of rubbish can be found rather frequently. This is an exceptionally common sight to see. Street food vendors who opt to reuse plates often do so by washing their inventory of cutlery as it is used by customers. This helps keep the plates clean and sanitary for subsequent customers. Plates that be used more than once might be constructed of either plastic or metal. They often have a highly constrained amount of time to accomplish this task while simultaneously preparing dishes to fulfill the orders of the patrons. This can result in the plates not being washed properly, which can lead to a range of health and safety concerns, including the chance of being exposed to E. coli and other infections. This can lead to a variety of health and safety concerns. It is not enough to just wash a dish to eliminate any bacteria that could potentially cause sickness. This is a significant concern in surroundings such as those found along roadways, where keeping cleanliness can be difficult. At the IISc Bangalore's Reimagine Waste hackathon, where teams of innovators gathered to develop products for reducing our urban plastic footprint, my friends and I were given this problem statement to work with. Our goal was to find ways to reduce the amount of plastic that is used in urban environments. We were tasked with devising solutions to cut down on the amount of plastic that is utilized in urban settings. We engaged in significant collaboration with garbage collectors, who are also referred to as "parikramas" in the local vernacular, to get a knowledge of the fundamental challenges that they encounter throughout the cycle of waste generation and collection. They had trouble with a variety of challenges, including the manual sorting of the various types of trash and the accumulation of trash in public spaces that were produced by food vendors who worked on the street. In recent years, businesses that distribute food have emerged as a substantial contributor to the garbage generated by single-use plastics. This trend is expected to continue in the years to come. When a customer orders food to be delivered, as opposed to eating in a restaurant, the food must be packaged in disposable containers so that it can be transferred to the customer. This ensures that the food stays fresh during the delivery process. After they have served their purpose, these containers are not intended to be recycled and should be discarded once they have reached the end of their useful life. Because of this, businesses that deal in the distribution of food are put in the difficult position of having to choose between developing packaging that is uncomplicated and kind to the environment or developing a presentation of their product that is unique and appealing. If eating establishments and delivery services were required to take a greater level of responsibility for the waste that was generated as an indirect result of their operations, then these businesses would place a higher priority on the utilization of environmentally friendly packaging in place of conventional plastic packaging. Biodegradable containers are an excellent choice for situations in which the container will be used for only a short period of time, such as meal delivery, in comparison to plastic packaging, which is typically used for foods that need to be stored for an extended period. Plastic packaging is commonly used for foods that need to be stored for an extended period. The alternatives that are used today are fabricated from paper or fiber and do not contain any components made of plastic. The amount of time necessary to break down a single unit of this package is still very large when compared to the period it will be in use, making this a less-than-ideal choice. In the future, we will need to develop solutions for the distribution of food in which the packaging may relate to the circular economy in a more effective manner to generate less trash. This is necessary for us to reduce the amount of garbage that we make. The production of plastics is undergoing significant changes because of technological advancements. Recent developments in injection molding technology have made it possible to manufacture intricate geometric plastic shapes in large quantities. In addition, plastics are materials that have been scientifically engineered and are known for their ability to maintain consistency in the production of plastic parts. The demand for plastic influences a wide variety of industries, including the automotive, medical, electrical, and electronic ones. The plastics industry ensures that the finished product complies with all regulatory rules and regulations imposed by the United States. The use of plastic materials can provide excellent solutions for industrial parts. Plastics and other polymers offer a variety of solutions since they can be made with such a wide variety of properties. For instance, you can locate plastics that are either rigid or flexible, almost any color, and either smooth or textured. A significant portion of this waste is produced by single-use plastics, which are then thrown away (rather than being recycled), and allowed to accumulate in landfills, where they release toxic chemicals into our atmosphere. This plan's overarching objective about the environment is to substantially reduce the quantity of single-use plastics that are being dumped in landfills in Virginia, which contributes to the pollution of our state's land, water, and air. The use of single-use plastics in Virginia's government agencies and educational institutions will be phased out in accordance with the directives outlined in Executive Order 77. This plan is intended to be implemented in three stages, the first of which will begin in July of 2021 and involve the elimination of non-essential single-use plastics such as food take-out containers, disposable plastic bags, and plastic straws. The third and final stage will involve the complete elimination of all other commercial single-use plastics by the year 2025. My project became relevant at this point in the story. At William & Mary, one of the objectives of the Sustainability Ambassador project titled "Alternatives to Single-Use Plastics" was to identify environmentally friendly substitutes for products made of disposable plastic. The completion of this project is necessary for the university to meet its goal of reducing its consumption of non-essential single-use plastics by 25% by the end of 2022. To assisting the university in meeting the requirements of Phase I of EO77 by the month of July, I devised a spreadsheet that provides up to five environmentally friendly replacement options for every single-use plastic product that is utilized on campus. This spreadsheet provides details regarding the locations of things. We can compost food scraps, paper goods, and anything else that is referred to as "greenware" or "compostable" at the College of William and Mary. In addition to that, we can recycle plastics numbers 1 through 7, aluminum cans, glass bottles, steel and tin cans, paper, and clean cardboard. The search for alternatives to disposable plastics that are compatible with the requirements of William & Mary's composting and recycling programs took up a significant portion of this project. In addition, we needed products that supported our partnerships with other companies, such as TK Promotions and ID America, so this search was also important. Amazon and The Supply Room Company are both considered to be among William & Mary's most important sources of supply. I explored the websites of The Supply Room Company and Amazon for alternatives to single-use plastics that were biodegradable, compostable, reusable, and/or recyclable. My goal was to identify alternatives to single-use plastics that could be used for this project. After that, I went over all these choices and made sure that they complied with the prerequisites of our composting and recycling programs, as well as the prerequisites of the school's desired sustainability certifications. I also made sure that they were environmentally friendly. These selections were entered into a spreadsheet, where they were further arranged, sorted, and categorized according to the category of use (e.g., kitchen and dining, promotional items, and office supplies). The alternatives to single-use plastics that were discovered from The Supply Room Company were added to an "eco-friendly" tab on the website. This tab allows buyers from William & Mary to search for products that are either recyclable, reusable, or biodegradable to find the best option for their needs. Similarly, alternatives that were discovered on Amazon have been grouped into a list that will shortly go live on the website of the Procurement Services Office. This list will provide choices of ecologically friendly products that can be purchased. PLA and other plant-based materials were used in the production of biodegradable cups like the one seen to the right. Over a hundred different alternatives to single-use plastics have been discovered. Alternatives were discovered in many other categories, including kitchen and dining, promotional items, cleaning products, office supplies, fences, and party supplies. These products included recyclable alternatives, such as honeycomb cushioned packaging paper and sandwich bags; biodegradable alternatives, such as utensils, plates, and garbage can liners made of plant-based materials like PLA; and reusable alternatives, such as portable fencing and mop supply kits.
