An entrepreneurial Northampton shire boot manufacturer established the Barker brand in 1880 in a modest house located in the center of England's shoe manufacturing sector.
The home was located in the town of Barker, Northampton shire.
The waterproof peg-sole boots made by Arthur Barker, a superb artisan, and natural inventor, were very popular during his lifetime (the pegs would swell when wet and make the sole waterproof). In order to keep up with the ever-increasing demand, he recruited other artisans from the neighboring villages to help him complete his ever-expanding order book.
Barker made an investment in industrial facilities before the turn of the century, and he subsequently secured contracts to supply the British army with boots during the First World War.
Barker did this with a clear eye on the future and a savvy sense of timing, and it paid off for him.
Because Arthur's three sons joined the family firm during the interwar years, the Barker brand was able to expand into new markets and regions, which contributed to the brand's continued growth throughout this time period. In 1947, a new factory in Earls Barton was constructed in order to house the manufacture of women's shoes. In 1950, the brand launched a separate sales organization in order to sell directly to shops.
