British Ceramic Tiles, which employs 380 people and has an 18-acre factory in Heathfield, shut down on Wednesday with immediate effect, blaming the recent loss of a significant customer contract in challenging market conditions. One of the largest employers in the area, BCT has been in business for more than 100 years and employs multiple generations of families. Only 67 employees remained at the factory when an announcement at noon instructed employees to leave as the company is being wound up under the administration of FRP Advisory LLP. "Any loss of jobs is awful, but to lose 313 in one go, and there will be more to come, is going to be disastrous," said Avril Kerswell, chairman of Teignbridge Council and a member of the Bovey Tracey Town Council.
"My wish would be for another big firm to step in and take it on. We need a lifeline for the workers," the worker said. "I can't imagine how people feel, and it's not just the workers but their families who are affected." It was one of the biggest plants of its sort in Europe and the ideal site for making ceramic products with a ready supply of English china clay nearby. 
There is optimism that production would move back to the area where it once produced up to five million square meters of tiles annually. Gregory Distribution is using a quarter of the structure for warehousing, while the remaining space can be divided into three lots for sale. "It's ready for occupation, and it would be nice to see the jobs that were tragically lost here returned as quickly as possible," says Tim Weston of JLL Property Services. Additionally, negotiations to have another manufacturer take over the location are in progress. It is hoped that the next chapter in the site's history will start soon.
