Remember the recall: which brands and products are not safe to use for the sleep of the baby? From January 2005 to June 2019, from January 2005 to June 2019, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) received more than 1,100 reports of accidents involving sleep products exposed to infants, including 73 infant deaths. 94 babies in 2021, but companies are still selling these unsafe babies sleeping products and generating millions of dollars in revenue every year. A 2021 investigation into the deaths of babies while sleeping in the prone position by the US Home and Reform Oversight Commission focused on Fisher-Price's Rock's Play, the first daybed on the market. More than 50 children have died since Rock's Play launched in 2009, according to a committee report, but the company continues to sell them, earning at least $200 million. Based on his research, Fisher-Price reported that the product was not safe before it was released. These products have been designed and developed after a safety analysis, medical consultation, extensive research, and over a year of evaluation and testing. Worryingly, Fisher-Price isn't the only company selling baby products that come with a variety of infant mortality and safety risks. Some of them have also been linked to safety issues, including an increased risk of choking. Learn about sleep reminder tips and some unsafe products to avoid. Safety Risks: Why Are Sleepers Dangerous? The baby cot is designed with a slope of 10 to 30 degrees and was first marketed to make it easier for children to jump. It was introduced in the United States in 2009 and has quickly become popular with parents concerned about reflux and colic. However, the steep angle can cause a sleeping baby's head to slide further forward, blocking the airways and leading to suffocation. Why are these unsafe baby products still being sold? According to a 2021 congressional report, the makers of Fisher-Price ignored warnings that their product was unsafe and that the CPSC didn't have enough regulatory or enforcement powers to protect consumers. The congressional report also revealed that Fisher-Price did not issue a court order until 2019 after the CPSC erroneously disclosed data on Rock's Play-related infant mortality to consumer reports. When Consumer Reports told CPSC and Fisher-Price they would release the data, the company reportedly pulled Rock's Play within days.
The news infuriated the Congressional Committee, which believed Fisher-Price and the Consumer Product Safety Commission would not have done anything had there not been a computer crash and consumer reports, despite the high number of infant deaths. New safety standards for the Safe Kids Sleep Act passed by the US Congress in June 2021 and the Senate Safe Families Act in March 2022 prohibit the manufacture, sale, and distribution of angled beds and sleepers (with sleeping surfaces greater than 10 degrees) for children. While you wait for this safety rule to take effect, always check the CPSC website for refunds or check with your pediatrician before purchasing baby products, especially at thrift stores and garage sales.
